With the heating on for 20–30 minutes, carefully feel the flow and return pipes to your problem radiator. One should be hot and the other warm, showing water is passing through.

If both pipes are hot but the bottom of the radiator stays cold, that points strongly to sludge build-up inside. If both pipes are cooler than others in the house, it might be a balancing or pump issue.

Check how other radiators are behaving

Walk around the property and check several radiators, especially those furthest from the boiler. Feel top and bottom and note any that have the same pattern of heat.

If only one or two radiators are affected, the fix is often local to those units. If many show similar symptoms, a whole-system solution such as powerflushing or pump checks is more likely to be needed.
